Announcing our planned trip
to the historic city of Kingston,

which in 1841 briefly became the capital of the “Province of Canada”
24 - 26 May 2017
Open to Members and Non-Members - Bring a Friend

The broad objective of our visit is to learn of the activities of citizen groups that are interested in prison reform and visit the local prison museums including the Kingston Penitentiary.

The late Pierre Elliott Trudeau insisted that in a just society the oversight of those incarcerated cannot be left solely to the professionals and it is the responsibility of citizens to see that the least empowered of us are treated with humanity and respect.

Canada is a signatory to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights passed by the United Nations, part of which reads:
Article 10.1 All persons deprived of their liberty shall be treated with humanity and with respect for the inherent dignity of the human person.
10.3. The penitentiary system shall comprise treatment of prisoners the essential aim of which shall be their reformation and social rehabilitation.

Our trip to Kingston provides a wonderful opportunity to meet some of the remarkable people who have taken Pierre Trudeau's admonishment to heart and to learn of their admirable work in monitoring prisons and prisoners.  We will also learn of the continuing efforts by some citizens to reverse aspects of the prison administration changes including the closing of the nation’s prison farms enacted by the Harper Government and which many feel were retrograde.
